Congresbury Residents Action Group (CRAG) is marshalling its forces to defend the village from another inappropriate development scheme.
Developer Strongvox hopes to build 24 houses on a field to the east of Brinsea Road, behind Venus Street and Nomis Park.
The plan was rejected by Congresbury Parish Council. North Somerset Council, the planning authority, refused permission on grounds of unsustainability, and the detrimental effect on the rural character and appearance of the village approach.
Strongvox wants to continue the fight with an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. The appeal will be determined on the basis of a hearing, which is a less formal procedure than a public inquiry.
CRAG wants the hearing to take place in Congresbury so that residents will be able to listen to the arguments without having to travel to Weston town hall where planning inquiries have traditionally taken place.
The action group, which has seen some successful campaigns in fending off developers, is not sitting on its laurels. “Although we have helped prevent the village from being overrun by inappropriate development, there are still approved schemes for dozens of new homes to be built in the next few years, “ said CRAG chair Mary Short.
“Strongvox already has 14 houses under construction in Venus Street behind Mulberry Road. And the firm has also, apparently, taken over responsibility for the Sunley development of 38 houses at Cobthorn Way,” added Mary.
If residents have not already commented on the Brinsea Road scheme, or if they have new points they wish to make, representations to the inspectorate must be made before 24 August to: https://acp.planninginspectorate.gov.uk/ or by email to email@example.com . Written submissions in triplicate should go to: Jasmine Rogers, The Planning Inspectorate, 3P Kite Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol, BS1 6PN.
♦CRAG welcomes residents who want to help with the fight to protect the village from unwanted development. Contact Mary Short on 01934 833764 or secretary Viv Tomkinson by email: Vivtomkinson@aol.com for further information.
