Some gardeners may have gone to the Congresbury Horticultural Society’s November talk totally disinterested in Bonsai, but many changed their minds after a fascinating talk by John Trott, Gold winner at Chelsea.
He assured them that a bonsai plant may be created from any tree or shrub, and is not a horticultural item, but an artistic one.
The method is to continually prune the plant, shaping it into the design you want, and the easiest one to start as a beginner is a cotoneaster.Bonsai prefer to be kept outdoors, because that is the nature of the tree or shrub, but may be brought indoors for a short period.
There may be a lot more entries in the bonsai class in local flower shows in future.

The Big Breakfast held on Saturday raised a whopping £1,480 for Weston Hospicecare. Well done to everyone who worked so hard to make it a success, and to all those who gave their support and bought a big breakfast. Special thanks go to Julie Gosling and family, without whom it would not have been possible.
Remember to take all your unwanted clothes and items to the Hospice shop in Broad Street, and while you’re there, have a look round, there may be just the thing you were looking for.
Loyal as ever, although the Congresbury branch of the Royal British Legion is now closed, so the standard was not present, the usual crowd of villagers gathered at the War Memorial Hall on November 11 to remember Armistice Day. A contingent of pupils from St. Andrew’s Junior School was there and one of the pupils, 10-year-old Maddie Smith, who is a Girl Guide, carried the standard of the Congresbury Scouts. Traffic stopped at 11a.m. for a short service, conducted by the vicar of Congresbury, Rev. Matthew Thomson. Ben White sounded the Last Post and Reveille and 97-year-old Fred Bailey, in a wheelchair, gave the Act of Remembrance.
Congresbury Residents’ Action Group (CRAG) is keeping a close watch on archaeology work on the field off Brinsea Road behind Nomis Park.
Developer Strongvox is considering a plan for 24 houses on the site, but because of the proximity to earlier finds of Roman kilns, North Somerset Council is carrying out an archeological survey.

‘Spring’, a new sculpture design for 2015
Spring is on the way, a time when thoughts start to turn towards enjoying and enhancing our gardens. I’ve been busy throughout the winter, designing and making sculptures and planters ready for the new season.
My first two shows of 2015 are not far away now – I’m taking part again in the Easter Sculpture Exhibition at the University of Bristol Botanic Garden (3rd – 6th April). As well as the outdoor sculptures in various media there will be a botanical art exhibition, demonstrations and garden tours.
We are a new (est. 2015) marquee company based in Langford and can provide clearspan marquees, furniture, heating, flooring and lighting for anything from a garden party to a wedding. Although the company is new I have nearly 20 years of experience in the industry. This year we are offering unbeatable prices as we try to build a loyal and satisfied local customer base. We can be found on Facebook or at www.langfordmarquees.co.uk.
