New village hall / community centre revised plans

Due to the significant increase in construction costs the Development committee took the decision that we needed to reduce the overall build costs. We are working with our Architects Stride Treglown on a revised plan as part of the next stage of the project. The initial draft we showed at the coffee morning would result in a reduction of 27% in the footprint but allow for future expansion. The main reduction comes from reducing the size of the main hall, which would still accommodate 260 (Memorial hall – 150, Old School Rooms – 120).

The reduced footprint will still mean we would meet our vision of providing a multi-use quality building to meet the needs of the village.

We are now reaching the stage of looking at the fine detail of the design, the finishes etc. and are looking for people to be involved in helping us get this right first time. We be at the village fete on Saturday, come and have a chat.

Beware doorstep sellers

Police are warning of an increase in door to door callers, often trying to sell cleaning and kitchen equipment. “We are taking this opportunity to remind you all that you should not have dealings with callers at the door. Likewise don’t respond to letters or Emails from unknown sources or have dealings with cold callers on the phone,” say Avon and Somerset Police.

“If you are looking for someone to provide goods or services then please make local enquiries with companies that you know and trust. Your local Trading Standards office can often help with details of reputable tradesmen.

“Please remember it’s your door step, it’s your decision. All suspicious callers should be reported to the police using either the 101 or 999 numbers.”

Say Hello to your elderly neighbour and help them to be safe

Sometimes all it takes is a simple ‘hello’ from a neighbour to make an elderly or vulnerable person feel less isolated and more safe, say police.

Everyone has a part to play in reducing opportunities for thieves to strike. If you’re a family member, neighbour or carer of an elderly or vulnerable person, please help to keep them safe and independent by giving them some good advice and reminding them to think about their personal safety.

The Village Agents would like to hear from you as part of a mapping project that will inform the provision of support to those who are members of the Armed Forces family.

Hooked on Bonsai

Some gardeners may have gone to the Congresbury Horticultural Society’s November talk totally disinterested in Bonsai, but many changed their minds after a fascinating talk by John Trott, Gold winner at Chelsea.
He assured them that a bonsai plant may be created from any tree or shrub, and is not a horticultural item, but an artistic one.
The method is to continually prune the plant, shaping it into the design you want, and the easiest one to start as a beginner is a cotoneaster.Bonsai prefer to be kept outdoors, because that is the nature of the tree or shrub, but may be brought indoors for a short period.
There may be a lot more entries in the bonsai class in local flower shows in future.
Orchids in the Home is the subject for the next meeting on Thursday, January 5 at 7.30 p.m.Visitors are welcome at £2 per meeting.
