25thFebruary 2019 was claimed to be the hottest February Day ever recorded. The sun shone all day and despite the early morning frost, it felt like Spring. The best place to enjoy Spring has got to be the ‘Strawberry Line’.
I was not the only person to take advantage of the glorious weather. Two young Mums were pushing their babies in pushchairs at the same time as answering their phones ! The normal rash of cyclists all trying to beat the speed record for the track and lots of Joggers. One ambitious walker asked how far it was to Wells. Perhaps he had a dose of ‘Spring Fever’.

One of the first trees to flower on the Strawberry Line before it gets any leaves is the ‘Sloe’ or ‘Blackthorn’. The delicate white flowers even attracted a wandering Bee.The warm sunny weather has brought on the Hazel and they are all draped in trailing ‘Catkins’. This should mean we will get an abundant crop of Cobnuts in the Autumn.I always enjoy seeing ‘Old Mans Beard’. Its one of the winter treats like clumps of cotton wool with the seeds about to fall out and start the process of sowing, growing, flowering and forming seeds all over again. The Strawberry Line is looking good for another 150 years. It will be celebrating its birthday of the first train on 3rdAugust 1869.
We meet every Wednesday 10-11am in the room behind the Methodist Church Hall. Come and join us for tea and a chat. There’s no need to book, just turn up.

We enjoy the physical and mental benefits of having an allotment and, of course, the produce! We learn and use good gardening practice and encourage sustainable, environmentally friendly methods. We help and advise new members. We are good gardening neighbours, keeping plots cultivated and following rules in the rental agreement with the Parish Council. We share excess produce and seeds with other plot holders – and with neighbours in the village!

The Association represents tenants who rent a plot on the Bristol Road Allotments from Congresbury Parish Council. We have an annual meeting to elect officers and committee. They liaise with the Parish Council on the upkeep and administration of the allotments and the immediate area. We hold summer and winter social events to meet up with plot holders from across the site. Membership (on payment of £1) provides a 50% discount on a group order from Kings Seeds and a 10% savings on purchases from Garden Park Nurseries on the A370 in Hewish. The allotment shop opens on selected Saturdays in Spring to sell bamboo canes and Growmore at very competitive prices.

We do not hold auditions – anyone can turn up at our weekly rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at 7.15pm at the War Memorial Hall.
There is no joining fee as such, if you’d like to join you have 2 free rehearsal sessions and then there are subs of £5 per week thereafter. There are 4 terms per year, which vary in length, but culminate in a formal concert either at the War Memorial Hall or St. Andrew’s Church – you only pay for the number of weeks/rehearsals in each term. Our Summer term begins on Tuesday 12th April and finishes with our concert on Tuesday 23rd June at War Memorial Hall.
Our next concert is Saturday 21st March at St. Andrews Church – 7pm for a 7.30pm start and comprises the elements of a classical Mass but each element is by a different composer, thereby demonstrating their individual depiction of a mass but also the flow and dynamism of a full mass! We think it’s a completely new and innovative approach to a Mass – compiled by our musical director, Jonathan Palmer.
We are a friendly tennis club, providing facilities to support and encourage the playing of tennis for all ages and abilities from the village and the surrounding area. The club offers social and competitive tennis as well as coaching opportunities for all ages and levels.
